Competitions Programme 2022/23

Hockey, Rounders, Basket Ball, Street Dance & Jump Rope

The County round of the National sports competitions took place on Sunday 4th December at Cramlington Learning Village. With 5 competitions to get through it was a 10am start for the teams taking part.  Once again we are hugely grateful to those who gave up their Sunday and helped on the day, refereeing, judging and stewarding.

Speaking Day ( Reading, Public Speaking, Call My Bluff, Brainstrust, Situations Vacant, Member of the Year)

The 2022/23 Competitions year began at Whalton Village Hall on 30th October with the County round of the Member of the Year, Situations Vacant and Speaking Competitions.  These competitions provide great experience in building confidence and communication skills and it was good to see so many entries particularly in the junior competitions with many members having only recently joined.  Many thanks to all judges who had the unenviable task of picking the winners and to all stewards who helped on the day. End of the 2021/22 Competitions Year

Rounders (25th September 2022)

The rounders competition at Glendale Middle School in Wooler was the final competition of the 2021/22 programme. After some close games it finished with a tie for first place between Cambo Young Farmers and the hosts Alnwick Young Farmers Club meaning it came down down to points difference. After everything was added up Cambo where eventually crowned victorious with a score of +24 compared to +16.5. In 3rd place was Bellingham, 4th Whitley Chapel and 5th Stamfordham.

Quoits (5th August 2022) 

The quoits competition was kindly hosted by Errington Coffee House. With six teams taking part there were some close game with Shaftoe Young Farmers Club and Bellingham Young Farmers eventually going head to head in the final. In the end Bellingham took home the trophy after a tense final.

National Sheep Shearing Final (14th July 2022)

The Great Yorkshire show provided the perfect stage for the National final of the Sheep Shearing competition.   Ciaran McNulty a member of Alnwick YFC qualified for the National final having won through from the county and northern area rounds of the competition  Top shearer Ciaran continued his impressive record in this competition placing 2nd in the final this year.  Ciaran has qualified for the National final for the last 3 years and won the competition last year.  Well done Ciaran.

National Competitions Weekend, Staffordshire (9th & 10th July 2022)

The National finals of the sports, speaking, choir, and clay pigeon shooting competitions took place in Staffordshire with Northumberland having finalists in 4 competitions.  The county choir, comprising members of Cambo, Stamfordham & Tritlington came a very well deserved 4th place.  In the clay pigeon shooting competition Shaftoe brothers Kyran & Haydn Rutherford both qualified from our county competition and both earned a top 10 place, Kyran placed 6th in the under 28 age group with Haydn, 5th in the under 17’s.  It was 5th place for the team of Haltwhistle members who completed in the Dodgeball final having won the county and northern area rounds of the competition. Well done to all our members for reaching the National final and representing the county at competitions weekend.

Clay Pigeon Shooting (Thursday 19th May 2022)
The clay pigeon shooting competition was held at Belsay Shooting Ground . A really good turnout saw 11 teams of 4 compete over a number of different stands. In the team event Shaftoe finished in first place with a score of 139 followed by Tritlington in second with 119 and Bellingham took third with 116.
Individually Shaftoe members, Kyran Rutherford for a second year running got the highest score with 42/50 followed by his brother Haydn with 40/50 with Alnwick member, Oliver Tulip placed third with 37/50.
A big thank you to Belsay Shooting Ground for being such welcoming hosts and all the work behind the scenes before hand.

Ten Pin Bowling (Tuesday 15th March 2022)

The 10-pin bowling competition was held at the Metro Centre in Gateshead. In total 108 members took part spread across 18 teams. Tritlington Young Farmers proved to be the team to beat winning the senior competition with 5 of the 6 players scoring over 100.  In the junior section Stamfordham Young Farmers Club finished in first place beating Shaftoe in second place by 82 points.

Senior 1st – Tritlington (731), 2nd – Coquetdale (591), 3rd – Berwick (586), 4th – Whitley Chapel (549), 5th – Stamfordham (545), 6th – Shaftoe (522), 7th – Bellingham (508), 8th – Cambo (493), 9th – Haltwhistle (491) 10th – Alnwick (485). Highest senior score was JT from Tritlington with 156 points.

Junior 1st- Stamfordham (610), 2nd – Shaftoe (528), 3rd – Tritlington (457), 4th – Whitley Chapel (430), 5th – Haltwhistle (401), 6th – Cambo (399), 7th – Bellingham (395), 8th – Berwick (381). Highest junior score was Jack from Stamfordham with 126 points.

Northern Area Weekend  (26th & 27th February 2022)

Cumbria were this years hosts for the Northern Area Weekend, held on 26th & 27th February.  During the first day of competitions we had entries in the Junior Speaking, Intermediate Brainstrust, After Dinner Speaking, Senior and Junior Member of the Year, Cheerleading and Choir.  The Choir came 2nd  and have now qualified for the National final in July.  Special mention also to Isabel from Bellingham who came 4th in Junior Member of the Year.

Day 2 saw teams compete in the Rush Hockey, Junior Frisbee, Dodgeball and Pantomime.  Haltwhistle came out on top in the Dodgeball and have now qualified for the National final in July.  Whitley Chapel triumphed in the Pantomime taking top spot, with Matthew Harding and Kate Richardson taking best actor awards.  Whitley Chapel will now head off to Warwickshire to the National final which is being held on the weekend of 23rd & 24th April.

The county came 4th overall, with Cumbrian teams 1st & 2nd and Durham coming 3rd.

Stockman  & Young Stockjudge of the Year (Sunday 13th February 2022)
8 senior teams and 6 junior teams gathered at 9.30am for a day of Stockjudging  kindly hosted by Whitley Chapel. Everyone judged all 3 classes of stock, with the beef and sheep taking place at Low Ardley, the dairy at Marleycote Walls followed by the quiz at Whitley Chapel Village Hall. A big thank you to the Common and Baynes families for allowing us onto their farms and providing the stock.

Pantomime Competition (Sunday 6th February 2022)

The YFC Performing Art competition made its long awaited return to The Queens Hall in Hexham.  Not held since the Drama Competition in February 2020, it was so good to be able to hold this competition once again and in front of a near capacity audience.  This year Clubs were required to perform a Pantomime and taking to the stage were  Whitley Chapel YFC , Stamfordham YFC and a joint production from Bellingham YFC and Cambo YFC with performances of Hickory Dickory Dock, Aladdin and Little Red Riding Hood respectively.

After some fantastic performances and stand out moments Whitley Chapel where crowned overall champions and will now represent Northumberland in the next round.

Pool & Darts Finals (Friday 4th February 2022)  The winter months, brings the Pool and Darts competitions, with league matches played between October and December, it was  teams from Haltwhistle, Cambo, Shaftoe and Coquetdale who won their league and qualified for the final.
In the Pool final after some close games Coquetdale were crowned overall champions and in the Darts the Haltwhistle A team beat the Haltwhistle B team 3-2,  checking out on double 1 for victory in the deciding leg.

A big thanks to The Crazy Horse Saloon for hosting us too.

Carpet Bowls Final (Thursday 27th January 2022)

After some close games, with the scores tied it came down to the last end of the last game with Tritlington managing to edge past Shaftoe to be crowned Northumberland YFC Carpet Bowls Champions 2022. Stamfordham also managed to beat Cambo, again on the last end to take home 3rd place.

County Quiz (Friday 21st January 2022)
There was a really good turnout for the county quiz with 9 senior and 8 junior teams taking part. Winning the junior quiz was Bellingham with Berwick in 2nd and Haltwhistle 3rd. The senior quiz was also very close with Cambo beating Bellingham by 4 points to claim victory and Berwick took 3rd place.
Big thanks also to Prince William Bar & Grill at Forget Me Knot Country Park for being such welcoming hosts.

Speaking Day (Public Speaking, Brainstrust, After Dinner Speaking, Reading, Situations Vacant) – Sunday 12th December 2021 at Whalton Village Hall
A huge well done to everyone who took part in the speaking competitions day. Bellingham had a very successful afternoon taking home the trophies for Public Speaking, Brainstrust, After Dinner Speaking and Situations Vacant (Lucy Robson) while Whitley Chapel came out on top in the Reading. A special mention must also go to Tritlington who still took part despite a few members unable to compete on the day.
The winners of these competitions will represent the County at the Northern Area Weekend 26th & 27th February 2022 in Cumbria.

Sports Day – (Sunday 5th December 2021)
Haydon Bridge High School provided the perfect venue for this year’s sports competitions. Always a popular and fiercely competitive day this year was no different.
Congratulations to Alnwick who won the rush hockey, Cambo who won the cheerleading and Haltwhistle who won both the frisbee and the dodgeball.
The winners of these competitions will represent the County at the Northern Area Weekend 26th & 27th February 2022 in Cumbria.
